Creative Alliance of New Orleans, Creative Capital and Moving Stories Dance Project have partnered to present yearly workshops that have been described as a “crash course in self-management, strategic planning, fundraising and promotion” for artists of all creative genres. This workshop takes artists on a three day retreat led by nationally renowned arts professionals. The experience is limited to 24 artists from Louisiana. All applications will be reviewed by a selection committee with the goal of assembling a very diverse group of artists from varied artistic genres and cultural backgrounds. Applicants must create original works. We encourage visual artists, composers, filmmakers, choreographers and all other mediums to apply. Applications will come out in late 2012 for the 2013 workshop. The Creative Alliance and Moving Stories believe that this program presents an opportunity for Louisiana artists to learn new methods in improving their professional careers in the arts.

The 8th Ward Cultural Community Center is a Multi-Tenant Arts Facility that will provide offices, studios, rehearsal, performance and exhibition space for small and mid-sized arts organizations (nonprofits) and independent artists. CANO, partnering with the National Performance Network (NPN), and Young Audiences is developing the project.

In addition to providing stable, affordable office space, 8th Ward CCC is also envisioned as a centralized office where “back office” functions can be shared – copier, postage meter, kitchen and break room, meeting rooms, receptionist, other staff, telephone system and internet access. These shared resources will allow organizations and artists to organize their work more effectively and better serve their constituents and communities. The development of the 8th WardCCC will streamline and provide an economy of scale for small non-profit business needs, and will be an important contributing factor to the success of these organizations. The 8th Ward CCC will provide much needed performance space for the New Orleans community as well as studio/work space for creative producers. This will be the only nonprofit owned and operated arts facility in New Orleans and we believe it will be a catalyst for unifying not only the 8th ward, but the 6th, 7th and 9th as well. This project is built on looking at, listening to, and asking questions of the people who live, work and play in this particular space. We want to discover the needs and aspirations and use this information to create a common vision that will unite and empower our community.

CANO has developed for the first time in 2012 a quarterly networking/informational series of events called CANOpeners. A focus of each of these events will be promoting cross discipline information, collaboration and innovation. Each one of these events partners with a new organization and occurs in a different neighborhood in order to ensure that CANO is reaching a wide variety of participants throughout our community. The first CANOpener occurred on March 13, 2012 in conjunction with Idea Village’s Entrepreneurship Week. This event brought together digital producers from New Orleans Digital Entertainment (NODE) and cultural and creative producers from CANO’s Creative Capital Professional Development Workshop. This event was held at the Contemporary Arts Center. Over 100 artists and entrepreneurs attended this event. This event was successful in that about 40% of attendees were artists and 60% entrepreneurs in the digital industry. We aim to bring together 50%/50% from each distinct sector.

The major goal of this program is to encourage participants to collect local art and to support their local artist community.

Art Home New Orleans is an annual event open to the public one weekend a year as well as a year round earned income program for CANO. Staring in 2010, Art Home New has organized over 70 locations of private art collections and artists’ studios. Last year approximately 250 people participated in this popular program which allowed visitors a glimpse into both the process of how art is created as well as the life of a work of art once it is bought by a collector. The major goal of this program is to encourage participants to collect local art and to support their local artist community. Over $5,000.00 in art was purchased due to this program in 2011 alone. CANO regularly presents panel discussions in conjunction with this event such as 2011’s “Conversation on Collecting” which assembled 8 stellar artists, collectors, curators and dealers such as Jonathan Ferrara, Amy Mackie, Miranda Lash, Ron Bechet, Robert Tannen and others to explore strategies for collecting. These panel discussions are free to all participants who purchased tickets to Art Home New Orleans.
