The Creative Alliance of New Orleans is pleased to announce its 5th Annual Art Home Tour on December 5, 2015. The tour spanned two metro parishes, from the Holy Cross neighborhood of the Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans, downriver to Poydras, Louisiana.
The “Downriver Art Home Tour and Sale,” just weeks before Christmas, included local artworks for sale. Close to a dozen sites on the tour included artists’ studios, homes with art collections, galleries, and the River House | Crevasse 22 located at a bucolic site adjacent to the levee of the Mississippi River in Poydras, LA.
The tour began at the Art House on the Levee (4725 Dauphine St.) in Holy Cross, the studio and gallery of Robert Tannen and Jeanne Nathan, where works by Tannen and other artists were on view and for sale. The tour continued in Holy Cross with stops at the studios of artists Diego Larguia and Bruce Davenport.
It continued to the Studio Inferno gallery and glass studio of Mitchell Gaudet, and the studio of Erica Larkin Gaudet, both in Old Arabi, which recently got approved as a new cultural district. Other artists included in Arabi are Mary Jane Parker, Gary Oaks, and Hayden Reilly. Also on the tour was the studio of metalwork artist Luis Colmenares in Chalmette.
The tour ended at the River House | Crevasse 22 in Poydras. On view at the River House were a photography exhibition about the “Spirit of the People of St. Bernard,” and “Land-Scapes,” including works about the beauty and risks of nature.
A Country Market of artworks and local foods, both fresh and prepared, was set up outside of the River House, adjacent to the Crevasse 22 Sculpture Garden, which features environmentally themed works by regional sculptors. Some artists included in the Market were: Zee Amer, Shirley Barreca, Errol Barron, Rachel David, Gabrielle Gaspard, Wendy Haines, Jorge Lovato, Don Marerro, Wendy Sack, and MORE!
At the conclusion of the tour the Los Islenos Christmas Extravaganza began at 5:00 pm at the Los Islenos Museum on Bayou Road, five minutes from the River House | Crevasse 22, with a musical celebration of the season and a traditional bonfire.
“We want visitors and residents to learn more about the aesthetics and culture of our region, and to be able to purchase works by regional artists,” said Jeanne Nathan, Executive Director of the Creative Alliance of New Orleans. “Everyone knows the New Orleans region is a cultural center, but outside of the French Quarter and our food and music, people know less. This tour opens the doors to an eclectic mix of neighborhoods, residences, studios, art centers, and galleries, deepening an understanding and appreciation of our culture,” said Nathan.
“The Torres | Burns Trust is delighted to be able to host this art tour and market. It further expands our initiative to bring the culture of our community forward to our residents and visitors,” said Sidney D. Torres III.
Artists on view in the River House include Blake Boyd, Keith Calhoun, Chandra McCormick, Kelsey Scult, Jonathan Traviesa, and Monique Verdin.
Artists on view in the Crevasse 22 Sculpture Garden include Luis Colmenares, Mitchell Gaudet, Erica Larkin Gaudet, Susan Gisleson, Gene Koss, Srdjan Loncar, Christopher Saucedo, Elizabeth Shannon, and Bob Tannen.
