CANO presents the People’s Murals on Saturday, August 15th.

“The People’s Murals,” an exhibit of large‑scale collaborative canvases painted by hundreds of New Orleans residents, will mark the 10th anniversary of Hurricane NEW ORLEANS ART AND STAGE NEWS 0 156 shares 1 6/8/2018 ‘The People’s Murals’ exhibit marks the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and the 2005 flood.

The exhibit, presented by the Creative Alliance of New Orleans in partnership with the Alembic Community Development organization, opens with a reception at 6 on Aug. 15, on the third floor Creative Space at the Myrtle Banks Building, 1307 O.C. Haley Blvd. in Central City.

The colorful murals were produced by “community members ‑‑ many of whom had never had a paint brush in hand before,” according to the exhibit announcement from CANO director Jeanne Nathan. The collaborative mural project was begun by artist Robert Tannen during the Prospect.2 International Art Festival in New Orleans in 2011. CANO will host two other 10th anniversary exhibits in Augustÿ ‑‑ “The Spirit of the People of St. Bernard: Portraits and Videos”: The exhibit will feature works by artists Jonathan Traviesa, Blake Boyd, Keith Calhoun and Chandra McCormick and Monique Verdin. It was created in partnership with the Crevasse owner, the Torres I Burns Trust.

The opening of the show on Aug. 26, from 4 to 7 p.m., at River House at Crevasse 22, 8122 Saro Lane, Poydras in St. Bernard Parish, will be part of a parish‑wide “Open House.” 6/8/2018 ‘The People’s Murals’ exhibit marks the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. “We want to use this opportunity to make the world aware of St. Bernard’s recovery from one of the worst natural disasters to strike an American metropolitan area, from showcasing the critical facilities and infrastructure that were rebuilt with federal tax dollars, to celebrating our unique Islenos heritage and culture, to highlighting our parish’s place in the local art scene,” said Mike Bayham, chairman of St. Bernard Parish Katrina Commemoration Committee. ‑‑ “9th Ward Improv Opera”: Spoken‑word, music, dance, and visual arts performed by local artists and Lower 9th Ward residents will be presented at 7 p.m. on Aug. 27 at St. Maurice Church, 605 St. Maurice Ave.

With a second performance, featuring expanded community participation, scheduled at 7 p.m. on Aug. 28 at the Andrew P. Sanchez Community Center, 1616 Caffin Ave., as part of the Lower 9 Resilience Festival. “It is a wonderful opportunity for survivors to tell our own story and listen to the truths of our neighbors, some for the first time…” said Kim Ford, community advocate and executive director of the Lower 9 Resilience Festival. “This production is fulfilling in a way that words alone cannot explain… I know we will hear of the courage and strength that our neighbors face as we continue to become whole again.”

Light refreshments are provided and this event is free and open to the public.

It will take place on the third floor of the Myrtle Banks Building at 1307 O.C. Haley Boulevard.
